Preventing Car Lockouts
Getting locked out of your vehicle is always inconvenient - and it can be downright dangerous. Luckily, there’s a series of strategies that you can implement to help prevent car lockouts - here’s some of them, as prepared by the Charleston automotive lockout experts here at King Locksmith.

Use your key fob to lock the door

If you get into the habit of utilizing your remote key / key fob to lock and unlock your car, you lower your chances of locking your keys in the car. If you use the lock button on the side of the door to lock the car as you get out of it, you may be running the risk of locking the keys in the car, especially if you have a push to start car - because the key fob may quickly fall out of your pocket without you noticing. Another easy way of locking your keys in the car is taking them out of the ignition and putting them on the seat while you grab something or text someone before leaving your car. Try to also get in the habit of checking your pockets for your keys before you lock all of the car doors.

Check Key Fob Battery

Smart key fobs won’t work to unlock or lock your car when their batteries run out, so make sure to replace your key fob’s batteries as soon as the low battery light appears. Without power you cannot get inside your own car. Most key fobs have a metal mechanical key, which in this situation you may be able to use to manually open your car door. Damaged fob chips may not be able to unlock or lock the car as well - even if it is keyed ignition.

Have a Spare Created in Advance

Creating a spare car key in advance may save you a ton of money, time, and stress when lockouts are experienced. It’s much harder, more stressful, and more expensive to have a car key made from scratch when you are locked out of your car - but it’s much cheaper to create a spare key in advance. By doing so, you ensure that if your keys are lost, damaged, or locked inside the car that you will still have a way of getting inside it and operating it - increasing your safety, and saving you stress while also being easy on your wallet.
