Common Reasons Locks Can Stop Working
Door locks, like all pieces of machinery, aren’t built to last until the end of time - and when locks stop working properly, it’s easy to get frustrated - especially if you’re locked out of your home! Here’s a guide from the expert lock repair team here at King Locksmith to the most common reasons that locks stop working.

Latch Damage

The fastener of the latch may have been damaged or fallen out of alignment with the other lock mechanics. Lock latches are connected to a bolt which is mounted to the door - and strike plates are attached to door jambs. If the latch is misaligned, the fix may be as simple as getting a professional locksmith to line it back in place.

Not Turning Keys

This happens when the key is hitting the lock but not turning. First, ensure you are using the right key for the lock. If it’s the right key, it’s possible the lock may be dirty, clogged with debris, or even frozen over! Another distinct possibility is that the key has worn down and needs to get recut.

Loose Cylinder

This often means that the set screw is loose. It can be fixed by removing the faceplate, replacing the set screw, and reassembling the cylinder. Consult a professional locksmith for guidance and assistance.

Stuck Deadbolts

This may be due to a strike plate that’s misaligned, and more rarely, a damaged deadbolt mechanism. This will require either professional grade repairs, or a mechanism replacement.

Broken Keys

Keys can possibly break - and the worst is when they break in the lock, which can cause severe damage - not to mention very inconvenient lockouts!! Contact a professional locksmith right away if this occurs.
